Monet Strachan became captivated by cardiac sonography very early on, working as a veterinary technician, assisting with ultrasounds. Little did she know this fascination of the heart would move her to pursue a career in echocardiography.

In this interview, she talks about the twists and turns of her remarkable 30-year career.

CCI: How has the field of sonography evolved over your 30 years in the profession?

Monet: I enrolled in a two-year Allied Health program and graduated with an AA degree in 1994. Transitioning from animal ultrasound to working with adults in cardiac sonography was rewarding, I found joy in interacting with people and making a difference in their lives.

Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed the field of sonography evolve, especially with the introduction of 3D imaging. I remember the excitement of showcasing 3D images to high school students who were already familiar with 3D through video games. It’s amazing how quickly they grasped the concepts and techniques. As the years passed, I embraced the challenges and growth within the field, adapting to new technologies and expanding my knowledge base. It’s been a journey of learning, adapting, and finding joy in the work I do each day.

CCI: How has your credential impacted your career opportunities?

Monet: Yes, absolutely. Being credentialed shows your commitment to your field and your career. I was motivated to take my career to the next level and decided to earn a credential in ultrasound technology (RDCS) to further enhance my skills and increase my value to potential employers. After completing the necessary training and education along with my expertise in stress echo imaging I was a sought-after candidate and landed a position as a clinical sonographer at UC San Diego. I continued to grow my experience with ultrasound-enhancing agents which set me apart in the field, and I quickly became a valuable asset to the hospital. When I heard that the ACS credential came out, I took it and it was one of the hardest tests I’ve ever taken in my life. It actually represented the higher-level challenges that our field experiences and requires from today’s professionals.

CCI: Does holding a credential help convey your commitment to career development and dedication to patient care?

Monet: I saw firsthand how my work could positively impact patient care and contribute to a safer and more effective healthcare environment. Earning my credential not only opened doors but allowed me to find my true calling in healthcare. Through dedication and a commitment to advancing my skills, I discovered my passion for using cutting-edge technology to improve patient outcomes, ultimately finding fulfillment in my career.

CCI: Does your credential give you a sense of confidence and achievement?

Monet: Absolutely. You know, my educational pathway started 30 years ago with an AA degree. I’ve been able to grow my skills and level up my career over the years through my determination to learn and through the validation of my expertise through the credentials I hold. That’s a pretty big accomplishment. I’ve proven that I have the skill set at an advanced level.

I’m very proud of my ACS credential and I promote it very aggressively.
