Dr. Carol Mitchell, PhD, ACS, RDMS,RDCS, RVT, RT(R), FASE, FSDMS is a prolific teacher and education researcher, having won awards for both including the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) Distinguished Educator of the Year, Cardiac Sonographer Distinguished Teacher Award, Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography Joan P. Baker Pioneer Award. Dr. Mitchell is a member of the Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) Exam Committee; a fellow of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers; a member of the Society for Vascular Ultrasound, American Society of Radiologic Technology, and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine; and past treasurer of the American Society of Echocardiography. She is also a fellow in the American Society of Echocardiography and recently received the American Society of Echocardiography 2022 Sonographer Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dr. Mitchell’s primary research interests are:
- Utilizing ultrasound to characterize the structure and tissue composition of the arterial wall and atherosclerotic plaque
- Developing imaging and measurement protocol to extract texture features from ultrasound images of the arterial wall and plaque
- Utilizing existing ultrasound technology in novel ways to study hemodynamics and their relationships to cardiovascular disease and cognition
- Development of interactive learning modules to be used to enhance inter-professional knowledge of non-invasive testing procedures and improve ultrasound measurement and analysis techniques.
